Jul. 2001 World Computer Bridge Championship
The 5th World Computer Bridge Championship was held July 23-28, 2001 as part of the ACBL's summer Toronto North American Bridge Championships. This year's World Computer Bridge Championship was supported by the ACBL, and sponsored by FunBridge.com. Al Levy, a member of the ACBL Board of Directors, is the creator of the World Computer Bridge Championship and acted as the organizer and coordinator of this year's event.

Six computer programs from around the world competed in the FunBridge.com World Computer Bridge Championship.

  • Blue Chip Bridge (Great Britain), Mike Wittaker & Ian Trackman, Blue Chip Ltd.
  • Bridge Baron (U.S.), Stephen Smith & George Yanakiev, Great Games Products.
  • Jack (The Netherlands), Hans Kuijk
  • Micro Bridge (Japan), Tomio Uchida & Yumiko Uchida.
  • Q-Plus Bridge (Germany), Johannes Leber, Q Plus Software.
  • WBridge5 (France), Yves Costel

Results (2001 Toronto)
The event started with the six participants playing a 32-board round robin. The top two programs from the round robin played a 64-board final match.

Comments: "Table Manager" (by Ian Trackman) was used for the purpose of playing one hand and semi-automating the match. Four playing programs were running on four separate computers connected by a network, and the Table Manager dealt the cards, transmitted and received all communications among the playing programs. The participants had to implement the TCP/IP interface with the Table Manager. Several programs could not attend because the implementation was not easy for them.
