Jan. 2000 World Computer Bridge Championship
The 3rd World Computer Bridge Championship was held January 16 through 20, 2000 as part of the WBF's Orbis World Bridge Championships, held in Bermuda. This year's World Computer Bridge Championship was co-hosted by the WBF and ACBL and sponsored by Orbis Investment Management Limited. Al Levy, a member of the ACBL Board of Directors, is the creator of the World Computer Bridge Championship and acted as the organizer and coordinator of this year's event.

Eight computer programs from around the world competed in the Orbis World Computer Bridge Championship.

  • Meadowlark Bridge (U.S.), Rodney Ludwig & David Walker, Meadowlark Software.
  • Blue Chip Bridge (England), Mike Wittaker & Ian Trackman, Blue Chip Ltd.
  • Micro Bridge 9 (Japan), Tomio Uchida & Yumiko Uchida.
  • WBridge5 (France), Yves Costel
  • Q-Plus Bridge (Germany), Johannes Leber, Q Plus Software.
  • Bridge Buff (Canada), Doug Bennion, BridgeWare
  • GIB (U.S.), Matt Ginsberg & Alan Jaffray, University of Oregon.
  • Bridge Baron 10 (U.S.), Stephen Smith & Don Farwell & Thom Throop, Great Games Products.

Results (2000 Bermuda)
The event started with the eight participants playing a 10-board round robin. The top four programs from the round robin played a 38-board semifinal match and the winners played a 54-board final.

Comments: Meadowlark had a serious bug in play logic, but was not allowed to fix it through the round robin. GIB used Moscito system; opening 1D(4+S),1H(4+H),1S(4-4 in H&S) with 8-14HCP, a strong club and relays. Some programs could not prepare the defensive system against Moscito. Especially, WBridge5 met GIB at the final had no defensive systems against Moscito. Though all programs were allowed to enter the meanings of the alerted bids manually, programs can not correctly compete without the pre-defined defensive system. GIB enjoyed its advantage at elimination round and the final. Micro Bridge and Q-plus had their defensive system against Moscito and did not give the advantage to GIB. GIB got only +1VP (14-13) from Micro Bridge and was defeated by Q-plus (21-30).
