主よ、あなたの平和を人びとにもたらす道具として、わたしをお使いください。
憎しみのあるところに愛を、
慰められることを求めるよりは慰めることを、
わたしたちは自分に死ぬことによって自分を見いだし、 |
ああ、神よ、我をして御身の平和の道具とならしめ給え。
我をして憎しみのある所に愛をもたらし給え。
ああ、主よ、我をして慰めらるるを求めずして、慰むることを求めしめ、
そは、我等は自ら与うるが故に受け、

この祈りは「聖フランシスコの祈り」とも呼ばれ、1913年にフランスのノルマンディー地方で発行された一宗教雑誌上に掲載されたもので、日本へは第二次世界大戦後に紹介された。聖フランシスコ自身が書いたものではないが、この祈りを身をもって実践した彼の精神を最もよく表現していると思われる。
主であるあなたが、あなたの創造物によって称（たた）えられますように。
特に、兄弟である太陽によって。
太陽は昼間であり、あなたからの光を与えてくれます。
太陽はその偉大な光輝によって美しく、光輝き、
高いところにおられるあなたのようです。
主であるあなたが、姉妹である月と星々によって称えられますように。
あなたは天を、これらの創造物で明るく、光輝に、きれいにされました。
主であるあなたが、兄弟である風と空気を通して称えられますように。
晴れても、嵐になっても、いろいろな天気の移り変わりにも、
あなたが、これらの創造物をめでることがありますように。
主であるあなたが、姉妹である水によって称えられますように。
水が便利で、つつましく、得がたく、清純であるからです。

大地は私たちを守り、治め、
さまざまな花と薬草の賜物をもたらすからです。
主であるあなたが、あなたへの愛のために他人を許し、
病気になり、裁きを受ける者によって称えられますように。
平和のうちに耐え忍ぶ者に、恵みがありますように。
彼らは、高いところにおられるあなたによって、栄光を受けるでしょう。

死は、誰も避けることができません。
生きているうちに罪を犯す者に、わざわいがありますように。

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

This prayer, also known as "St. Francis' Prayer," actually first appeared in a religious magazine published in 1913 in Normandy, France, and was introduced to Japan after World War II. It was not written by St. Francis of Assisi, but is said to best express the spirit of St. Francis, who practiced exactly the contents of this prayer.
Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,
especially Sir Brother Sun,
Who is the day through whom You give us light.
And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,
Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.
Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,
And fair and stormy, all weather's moods,
by which You cherish all that You have made.
Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,
So useful, humble, precious and pure.
Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,
through whom You light the night
and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

Mother Earth
who sustains and governs us,
producing varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs.
Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon
for love of You and bear sickness and trial.
Blessed are those who endure in peace,
By You Most High, they will be crowned.
Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,
from whom no-one living can escape.
Woe to those who die in mortal sin!
Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.
No second death can do them harm.
Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,
And serve Him with great humility.
